We are one of New Zealand’s largest nurseries, growing fruit trees, kiwifruit and hops for orchardists, and fruit, ornamental, berry plants for garden retailers. We are a proud family-owned business that celebrated 50 years of growing in 2021. Owned by the Waimea Group, Waimea Nurseries operates alongside businesses in Fruit Intellectual, Property Management and Development, Tissue Culture Laboratory, and other related companies. The business is based in Appleby, Nelson with the Laboratory based in Hastings and an additional nursery in Auckland.
About the role:
We have an exciting new position that will take the lead on a first of a kind, specialised project that will support the development of Waimea’s berry strategy. This position will be responsible for discovering, proposing and helping to implement and manage an end to end, best practice production system for commercial, high-quality containerised berry plants. This position will be based in the beautiful Nelson region with some domestic and possibly international travel required at times.
We are looking for someone who has experience in areas such as:
- Growing berry fruit such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries
- Evaluating and implementing best practice systems to improve or correct performance
- Using hydroponic methods, primarily using soil-less growing techniques
- Evaluating and implementing new growing technologies
- Growing vegetables, fruit trees, and berry bushes using traditional methods
- Growing mature plants and trees from tissue culture plantlets
- Conducting research and implementing best practice techniques
- Knowledge of Ellepot growing systems advantageous
